Sen. Hutchison supports division of Iraq

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said Tuesday that dividing Iraq into three semi-autonomous regions could be a workable solution.

In an interview with Fox News, the Texas Republican said the United States cannot leave Iraq until the country has achieved some kind of stability.

Hutchison chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

Hutchison said Iraq's oil revenues should be handled on the federal level with the Sunnis getting a share.

"But if you can allow their security forces, their police forces to be of their own kind, I think you would have short-term stability that would begin to build up an economy, which is what these people need," she said.

Asked about Turkey's reaction, she said that as long as the division does not create an independent Kurdish state she does not believe that would be a problem.
