Lobbyist Abramoff starts jail sentence

CUMBERLAND, Md., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Convicted Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff entered federal prison in Maryland Wednesday to begin serving a near 6-year sentence for fraud.

Abramoff was sentenced in connection with guilty pleas involving a casino boat gambling scheme, and is also is awaiting sentencing for corruption involving government officials and their staff members.

However, federal prosecutors consider him a valuable source in hunting down other corruption in the capital and won a bid to have him incarcerated at a minimum security federal prison in Cumberland, Md., two hours away from the nation's capital, ABC News said.

The network said Abramoff has been meeting almost daily around Washington with Justice Department investigators and was seen Tuesday in Washington carrying a computer laptop case.

A source close to the investigation said Abramoff had made reference to "six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic senators," and described giving gifts to "dozens of members of Congress and staff."
