Newspaper withdraws endorsement

GLENS FALLS, N.Y., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., lost the support of a newspaper in his district Friday for refusing to release information about a domestic violence complaint.

The Glen Falls Post-Star withdrew its endorsement in an editorial. Earlier this week, newspapers reported that police had responded to an emergency call from Sweeney's home.

"The congressman has said he wants the truth to come out," the newspaper said. "But his actions in the wake of the incident and the disclosure of the 911 call in the media indicate otherwise."

Also Friday, New York Gov. George Pataki and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared at a rally to support Sweeney.

None of the speakers mentioned the domestic violence flap, unless a remark from state Sen. Joe Bruno was a veiled reference, Fox23 News reported.

Sweeney's wife Gayle was at his side.

"And thank you Gayle for all the things you do and everything you put up with," Bruno said.
