Guantanamo inmates fast for Ramadan

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- U.S. commanders at Guantanamo say nearly all of the more than 400 prisoners at the remote U.S. Navy base fasted for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It was fifth Ramadan in a row for most captives, who began arriving from Afghanistan in January 2002, the Miami Herald reported.

Army Lt. Col. Mike Nicolucci, deputy commander of detention operations, said 99 percent of inmates observed the holy month.

Delegates from the International Committee of the Red Cross visited during Ramadan and brought with them special Ramadan cards that captives could easily fill out, to send brief holiday greetings to their families, the newspaper said.

The Herald said a specially-prepared holiday feast marked the end of Ramadan, Eid al Fitr, with baklava and traditional stews.
