U.S. wants more Iraqis trained in security

WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- U.S. military leaders in Washington say more Iraqis need to be trained to assume security roles for the country but the numbers are being debated.

About 310,000 Iraqis have received U.S. instruction in police work, security and intelligence but commanders there have told the Pentagon even with another planned 15,000 trainees, the country will still be short, CNN reported.

Monday, U.S. national security adviser Stephen Hadley met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to discuss accelerating the training of security forces and the transfer of security responsibilities to the Iraqi government.

While speeding up the program would increase the number of U.S. military trainers, it would not affect the overall troop strength that fluctuates from 140,000-150,000, the report said.
