Recommendation urges Katsav to step aside

JERUSALEM, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Israeli Attorney General Menahem Mazuz says President Moshe Katsav should step down until misconduct allegations against him are resolved.

Mazuz submitted his recommendation Sunday to the High Court of Justice saying Katsav should ask the Knesset to approve his suspension from his largely ceremonial post -- even though Katsav has said he would not step down, the Jerusalem Post said Sunday.

The attorney general said if Katsav continued his duties, the investigation against him could be hampered, the Post said.

The government does not have the power to remove Katsav, but members of the Knesset urged Katsav to remove himself from office, the Post said.

Mazuz said investigators found enough evidence to indict Katsav on a charge of rape, other sexual misconduct offenses, grand larceny, fraud, breach of trust and violated wiretapping laws, the Post said.

Investigators said they still were investigating allegations that Katsav may have harassed a witness and disrupted judicial procedures.
