Home Secretary Reid to block EU workers

LONDON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- British Home Secretary John Reid is proposing a plan to block jobs for immigrant workers from countries about to join the European Union, a report says.

The plans focus on immigrants from soon-to-be EU members Romania and Bulgaria, and has met with harsh criticism from officials in both countries and throughout Britain for its alleged unfair treatment of immigrants, said the London Observer.

Reid's proposal is in stark contrast to the open-door policy Britain gave Poland and other countries when they became EU members in 2004, the newspaper said.

The Observer reported that the debate over the issue is still ongoing and that Reid is expected soon to roll out the remainder of his immigration plans.
