DETROIT, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- In an effort to recognize 19th-century civil rights leader Sojourner Truth, a Michigan group aims to add a statue of her to the Capitol rotunda.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the Detroit chapter of the National Congress of Black Women is planning in November to ask residents of Michigan to donate $1 toward the effort to recognize abolitionist Truth, who spent her last 23 years in Michigan and is buried in Battle Creek.
Truth's statute would be added to a statue known as Portrait Monument that currently features suffrage leaders Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.
In addition to suffrage and women's rights, Truth traveled the country advocating religious tolerance and an end to violence, among other issues.
