NYC may lose Dem convention to Denver

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- New York City's bid to land the 2008 Democratic National Convention is in jeopardy, improving Denver's chances of winning the event, a New York official says.

But Denver has logistical problems because of a scarcity of hotel rooms, The New York Times reported Saturday.

New York's bid is threatened because Mayor Michael Bloomberg is spread too thin with fund-raising commitments that he may not be able to raise the $100 million needed from private donors to pay for the convention, the unidentified New York official said.

If Bloomberg's team does not raise the money, the city would either have to make up the difference or drop out of the bidding, the Times said.

A Democratic convention in New York would likely give Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., a starring role, even if she is not chosen as the party's presidential nominee.
