U.S. Marine alleges abuses at Guantanamo

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- The Pentagon announced it is cooperating with an investigation sparked by a U.S. Marine sergeant's allegations of prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay.

Sgt. Heather Cerveny, who visited the base while working for a military lawyer representing prisoners, said in a sworn affidavit filed with the Pentagon Inspector General that Navy prison guards told her over drinks at a bar on the base that harsh physical abuse had repeatedly occurred, ABC News reported Friday.

"One sailor specifically said, 'I took the detainee by the head and smashed his head into the cell door,'" Cerveny told ABC.

She alleged the guards detailed several instances of abusive behavior.

She said the guards reported revoking detainees' privileges "even when they're being good" and refusing to bring the prisoners water. She said in her affidavit that the guards "do this to anger the detainees so they can punish them when they object or complain."
