Aussie motorists switch to LPG

CANBERRA, Australia, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Australian motorists who have converted their vehicles to liquefied petroleum gas have collected millions of dollars from the government.

Minister for Industry Ian Macfarlane told Parliament there had been 50,000 calls to a special hotline since August when they government announced grants of up to $1,500 to motorists converting their autos from gasoline to LPG.

"In just four days, since we began processing claims, 1,734 grants worth ($2.5 million) have been paid out under the scheme," Macfarlane said.

Monetary figures are in U.S. dollars.
