SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A California appeals court has upheld a ban on same-sex marriage, probably sending the issue to the state supreme court.
The appeals court ruled 2-1 that California's traditional definition of marriage can be changed only by the legislature or the voters.

The ruling overturned a trial judge's decision last year that the ban violated the state Constitution. It followed similar decisions in Washington and New York.
