Alleged Katrina mercy killings probed

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A coroner in New Orleans says allegations a doctor and two nurses euthanized four elderly patients after Hurricane Katrina will go to a grand jury.

Orleans Parish, La., Coroner Frank Minyard told CNN the decision was made to hand the investigation over to the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office, which would neither confirm nor deny picking up the case.

Dr. Anna Pou and nurses Cheryl Landry and Lori Budo of the New Orleans' Memorial Medical Center were arrested in July after a 10-month investigation into the deaths of the patients who were aged 62, 66, 89 and 90.

The four bodies were found to contain a deadly mix of two drugs that had not been prescribed to them and Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti charged the trio with second-degree murder.

Sources told CNN that the killings were allegedly carried out as conditions deteriorated after the Aug. 28 storm and looters converged on nearby buildings.
