Publisher of The Miami Herald resigns

MIAMI, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Jesus Diaz Jr. resigned Tuesday as publisher of The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald and as president of the Miami Herald Media Co.

Diaz's resignation follows controversy over some journalists from El Nuevo Herald accepting payments for participating in U.S.-government broadcasts on Radio Marti and TV Marti, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

David Landsberg, who previously served as general manager, has taken over the position of company president and publisher of the newspapers.

"I realize and regret that the events of the past three weeks have created an environment that no longer allows me to lead our newspapers in a manner most beneficial for our newspapers, our readers and our community," Diaz had earlier written in a letter to shareholders. "Therefore, I informed our parent company of my intention to resign as soon as my replacement could be found."

Diaz said in the letter that two reporters and a freelancer fired Sept. 7 after their involvement with the government broadcasts was uncovered would be offered amnesty and invited to return.
