Czech government loses confidence vote

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- The rightist government of Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek collapsed Tuesday after it failed to win a parliamentary confidence vote.

The 200-deputy lower house voted 99-96 to abolish the minority Civic Democrat government's support with five deputies were not present, Prague Radio reported.

Topolanek, conservative premier of the minority coalition government, said his Cabinet will probably formally resign Oct. 11 and will call for early elections for the beginning of next year.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus is to name a new prime minister designate to form a new government, the radio said.

On Sept. 4, Klaus appointed Topolanek as prime minister and gave him 30 days to work before seeking a confidence vote.

In June, Topolanek's Civic Democrat party won 81 seats, the most of all parties in the 200-seat lower house, but it was not enough to form a government without coalition supporters.

Leftist former Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek's Social Democrats won 74 seats in the June elections and their government resigned Aug. 16.
