Basketball player describes shooting

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- One of five Duquesne basketball players shot on the university's Pittsburgh campus told ESPN a shooter's girlfriend had been talking to a player.

Shawn James said he believes two men were involved in the attack.

James was shot in the foot early Sunday morning. One of his teammates, Sam Ashaolu, was in critical condition Monday after being shot in the head, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported, while two others were hospitalized as well.

James told ESPN he and his friends were hit as they walked away while the gunman and his girlfriend argued. The five, along with other basketball players, had just attended a dance sponsored by the Black Students Union.

Police had not yet made an arrest. They do not believe Duquesne students were involved except as victims.

James said the woman hugged one of the basketball players and then "her boyfriend called her over and they started arguing."

"We told him we had no time for this and as soon as we turned away two guys started shooting," he said.
