Allen and Webb face off on NBC

ROANOKE, Va., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., and his November opponent -- Democrat Jim Webb -- sharply disagreed on the Iraq war during a debate on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Allen insisted that although the Iraq war is tough, the United States cannot give up or pull out its troops.

"Meet the Press" moderator Tim Russert asked Allen about weapons of mass destruction, and if he were to have known of their absence, would he still be in favor of the war. Allen said he could not look back on mistakes of the past.

Webb called the Iraq war an "incredible strategic blunder."

Allen lashed out at Webb, saying he failed to support the first war in Iraq in the early 1990s. "Heck, the French were even in favor of military action in 1991," Allen said.

Webb defended his actions in the early 1990s, often returning to his history as a Marine in Vietnam.
