Thousands attend papal mass in Regensburg

REGENSBURG, Germany, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- About 250,000 people gathered in a field near Regensburg to hear Pope Benedict XVI say the last outdoor mass of his visit to Germany.

The faithful began gathering Monday night, Deutsche Welle reported, spending the night singing hymns.

There was one disruption when a young man ran toward the altar as the pope finished his sermon. Police said he was simply an over-enthusiastic fan.

Benedict, as Josef Ratzinger, taught theology in Regensburg from 1969 to 1977. He spent part of Tuesday in meetings with faculty at the university.

The pope's six-day visit to Bavaria has been a homecoming. His itinerary has included Munich, where he served as archbishop from 1977 to 1982, and his birthplace, Markt Am Inn.

On his first visit to Germany after his elevation, he attended World Youth Day in Cologne last year.
