Possible break in Phoenix serial killings

PHOENIX, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Phoenix police had a man in custody Thursday, charged with a sexual assault linked to a serial predator suspected of eight killings and 15 other crimes.

While police were not willing to say they had captured the man known as the Baseline Killer, spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill told the East Valley (Ariz.) Tribune the man currently "is not connected to any of the (other serial) incidents," but added "we are not ruling out anything at this point."

The unidentified "approximately 40-year-old black male" was taken into custody after being stopped by police in his car Wednesday night. A search warrant was later issued and the man's home was searched, the Arizona Republic reported.

Investigators did not indicate which specific assault the arrest involved.

Police have said the Baseline Killer began a string of rapes, killings, assaults and burglaries on Sept. 8, 2005, in Tempe, Ariz., with the death of a 19-year-old woman.
