Appeal fails for Holocaust denier

VIENNA, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The Austrian Supreme Court has upheld British historian David Irving's conviction for denying the Holocaust.

The appeal followed a February trial where Irving admitted that in 1989, he had denied the slaughter of millions of Jews by the Nazis had taken place during World War II, the BBC reported Tuesday.

However, Irving said during the trial his mind had been changed, and he now believes the event happened.

Irving was also found guilty of claiming that the Kristallnacht pogrom of November 1938, which featured Nazi soldiers attacking and setting fire to Jewish businesses and synagogues, had not been performed by the Nazis, but people dressed as Nazis.

Progress on a second appeal, contesting Irving's three-year prison sentence, is not expected for at least two months, the BBC said.
