New Czech minority government appointed

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Czech President Vaclav Klaus Monday appointed a new minority cabinet for conservative Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.

The new rightist coalition government was given 30 days to work before seeking a vote of confidence in Parliament's lower house, Prague Radio reported.

Many observers expressed doubts the new 15-member cabinet will pass the confidence vote scheduled for Oct. 4, the radio said.

If the government fails to pass the vote it will have to step down and early parliamentary elections would be called at the beginning of 2007.

In the meantime, Topolanek's government will work on a 2007 budget for the nation.

Topolanek's Civic Democrats won June parliamentary elections but only just succeeded in creating a coalition government.

The rightist government of the civic Democrats replaced the leftist government of Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek, who resigned Aug. 16.

In the June elections, the Civic Democrats won 81 seats, the most of all parties in the 200-deputy lower house, but not enough to form a government without coalition supporters. Paroubek's Social Democrats won 74 seats.
