NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Hillary Clinton has silenced many of the critics who derided her as a liberal carpetbagger when she ran for the U.S. Senate from New York.
Showing up in small towns across the state, her attention to details of her constituents' needs have increased her support even among Republicans, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Supporters who would like to see Hillary Clinton back in the White House as president say her performance in the Senate shows what she could do as a presidential candidate. But polls show many people outside New York continue to demonize Clinton as they did when her husband was president.
"I'm glad they love her in New York. I'm glad they think she's a great senator," said Dick Harpootlian, a South Carolina Democrat who has known the Clintons for years. "In the next 26 months, do you think there's enough money on the face of the Earth for 51 percent of the country to know her that well? I don't think so."
Clinton refuses to answer questions about a 2006 presidential run, saying she is focused on running for re-election. She also refuses to promise to serve out a full second six-year term in the Senate.
