Violence flares in Timor-Leste

SYDNEY, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- More violence has erupted in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste.

Fighting broke out Friday between rival gangs at a refugee camp in Dili's center, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Some 15,000 people have been housed in temporary shelters since violence erupted in Dili in May.

At least four people were injured in the latest clash and surgeons removed bullets from several victims, the ABC radio report said.

Police say the latest violence is not connected with the hunt for 57 prisoners who escaped from Dili's Becora jail earlier in the week. Two of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured but the others, including Alfredo Reinado -- the military policeman blamed for fomenting the original unrest -- are still at large.

Reinado made a surprise appearance on the state-run TV service in Timor-Leste criticizing the government, which he said "has no capacity to lead and has no good politics."

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says he will discuss security issues with Timor-Leste leaders when he visits there Monday.
