Palestinian captured at British Embassy

TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Israeli police arrested a gun-wielding Palestinian hours after he infiltrated the British Embassy and asked for asylum, threatening suicide if he was rejected.

Nadim Injahz said he was not safe in either the Palestinian Authority or Israel because he had been a police informant.

Police commandos reportedly seized Injahz without difficulty, the BBC said. During a long standoff, Injahz may have been given food laced with a sedative.

Injahz had been living in Israel illegally for eight years. He told the magazine Yedioth Ahronoth in an interview published two months ago that police promised him an Israeli identification card when he first became an informant in 2000.

He appealed to be classified in Israel but the high court turned him down a few days ago, Ynetnews.com reported.

"This is a disappointed collaborator who wants to leave the country," said Maj. Gen. David Tzur, head of the police in the Tel Aviv area. "We want to get this incident over with quietly and are hoping we can prevent him from committing suicide. We have no interest in seeing him hurt himself or others."
