Detroit man charged in prostitute killings

DETROIT, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Prosecutors have charged a man who allegedly stalked women on Detroit's eastside with raping and killing seven prostitutes over five years.

Wayne County, Mich., prosecutor Kym Worthy called Shelly Andre Brooks "a quintessential serial killer" when he was charged on Tuesday.

"He really thought he was killing his mother all over again," said Worthy.

Brooks, 37, also is suspected in seven other killings of drug-abusing prostitutes. He was caught July 30 after police received a tip from a woman who survived a beating and rape.

Brooks said police forced him to sign a confession, the Detroit Free Press reported. The Detroit News said DNA evidence had linked Brooks to at least seven killings.

Brooks was held without bail and a preliminary court hearing on the rape and assault charges was scheduled Sept. 11.
