Schwarzenegger settles groping suit

SACRAMENTO, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has settled a lawsuit by a British woman who claimed that he groped her after she interviewed him on television.

Lawyers for the governor and Anna Richardson, a former television host, told the Los Angeles Times the terms of the agreement are confidential. In her suit, Richardson accused Schwarzenegger and two top aides of libeling her by spreading stories that she had thrown herself at the governor.

Richardson sued in Britain, where libel laws are friendlier to plaintiffs.

"Can't say anything actually," lawyer Graham Atkins said. "It's all confidential. But everyone seems to be pleased."

Richardson said Schwarzenegger, after the interview taping, fondled her breasts, telling her he wanted to know if they were real. His version was that she walked over to him holding her right breast and asked him what he thought.

The Times interviewed Richardson and other women for a story on the groping allegations during the 2003 recall election that sent Schwarzenegger to the California governor's mansion.

The Republican governor is running for re-election in November against Democratic challenger Phil Angelides.
