India wants to keep right to test nukes

NEW DELHI, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says India will not allow the United States to put a cap on the country's ability to conduct future nuclear tests.

The Press Trust of India sys New Delhi will retain the right to decide whether to carry out future atomic tests despite the civil nuclear deal with Washington.

Singh said the deal would put India on a par with five nuclear weapon states, although there remains a question about the issue of interchangeability between military and civilian nuclear reactors, the news service said.
