Rove fends off protests at GOP fundraiser

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Fending off anti-war protests, White House adviser Karl Rove told Republicans in Texas a strong economy will drive GOP candidates to November wins.

Speaking at a fundraiser for 300 people that raised $250,000, Rove called Democrats tax-and-spend liberals who were wrongly committed to cutting and running from Iraq.

"We are right, and they are wrong," he said.

Among the 50 protesters outside the Renaissance Austin Hotel Saturday was anti-Iraq war Cindy Sheehan. Chanting "Try Rove for treason," she said Rove planned the war that killed her son and she wanted him arrested.

One protestor managed to slip into the event, the Austin American-Statesmen reported. The unidentified woman shouted objections during Rove's talk, including "men and women are dying," before being escorted out of the room.

As the door closed behind the woman, Rove asked Pat Robbins, the GOP group's executive director, "Pat, did you get her check before she left?"
