Judge reinstates charges against Gotti

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Some racketeering charges were reinstated against Mafia scion John A. Gotti, who faces his third trial in a New York federal court.

U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin, whose had earlier ruled prosecutors could not go after those charges, reversed herself after a contentious hearing, reports The New York Times. Jury selection was set to start Monday.

Those charges accuse Gotti of using profits from loan-sharking and extortion to operate two holding companies.

The government wanted to pursue the charges partly to counter Gotti's claim that he had left the mob in the 1990s. It alleges the reinstated charges concern crimes that occurred after Gotti says he left the mob.

The trial, Gotti's third in two years, relates to charges he ordered the abduction of Curtis Sliwa in 1992 after the radio talk-show host criticized the elder Gotti on the air. In the previous two trials, the juries were deadlocked.

The elder Gotti was convicted of racketeering and was given a life sentence. He died in prison in 2002.
