Lieberman fights back

HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- With less than a day before the Democratic primary in Connecticut, U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is fighting back to keep his seat against challenger Ned Lamont.

On Sunday, Lieberman accused Lamont of distorting his record on Iraq and other issues, reports the Boston Globe.

But Lamont kept up with his war theme, urging the government to start bringing home U.S. troops in Iraq and letting Iraqis themselves solve the issue.

The Globe report said the war issue has given Lamont a real opportunity for a primary victory even as Lieberman has sought to portray him as a spoiled millionaire with a lack of experience.

"The other guy comes out of nowhere, and he's kind of telling everybody what they want to hear. But he hasn't been there to do the work," Lieberman said. "I've fought to make your lives better."

Latest polls show Lamont ahead by as much as 13 percentage points. Lieberman may run as an independent if he loses Tuesday's race.
