'Son of Sam' says he does not want parole

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- New York's confessed Son of Sam serial killer, David Berkowitz, says his lawyer got it wrong and he doesn't want to get out of jail.

"I humbly ask you to please cease and desist from any and all further efforts to seek to obtain parole for me," Berkowitz wrote to lawyer Mark Jay Heller on July 27 the New York Post reported Sunday.

Two weeks earlier, after Berkowitz was denied parole for the third time, Heller vowed to mount an all-out effort to win freedom for his client at his next parole hearing in 2008.

But Berkowitz -- who confessed to killing six people and wounding several others in New York City in the late 1970s and sentenced to six life sentences in prison for the killings -- told Heller in his letter he hadn't "authorized you to seek parole for me."
