Brazil: President still leading polls

BRASILIA, Brazil, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is projected to win the first round of upcoming presidential elections, a new poll found.

Ibope pollsters reported that da Silva would likely garner 44 percent of the vote, while his closest rival, former Sao Paulo Gov. Geraldo Alckmin would get 25 percent.

The president's lead has, however, shrunk since the last major poll -- taken in June when surveys showed da Silva with 48 percent of potential votes. Alckmin's support has risen from an estimated 19 percent in June.

More than 2,000 people were surveyed, said Ibope, whose poll has a 2 percent margin of error.
