Election protests paralyze Mexico City

MEXICO CITY, July 30 (UPI) -- More than a million protesters clogged the streets of the Mexican capital Monday, pledging to remain until an electoral recount.

Led by losing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the estimated 1.5 million kept Mexico City at a relative standstill for the second day in a row, El Universal reported online.

Addressing those on hand, Lopez Obrador told his supporters they must "defend democracy" and force the recognition of "my triumph as president."

Mexican elections officials have concluded that the leftist Lopez Obrador -- a former mayor of Mexico City -- lost the election to conservative candidate Felipe Calderon by 243,000 votes out of 41 million cast.

A special electoral court has yet to ratify the results, and Lopez Calderon has challenged the official count, claiming there were widespread irregularities, human errors and fraud -- including ballot box stuffing.

Lopez Obrador is demanding a full recount, but Calderon says a recount is unnecessary and illegal.
