Yates sent to N.Texas hospital

HOUSTON, July 27 (UPI) -- A Houston judge Thursday ordered Andrea Yates remanded to the maximum-security North Texas State Hospital for the killings of her five children.

Yates was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Wednesday in the June 2001 drowning deaths of 6-month-old Mary, 2-year-old Luke, 3-year-old Paul, 5-year-old John and 7-year-old Noah.

This was the second time Yates had been tried for their deaths. Her 2002 conviction was overturned because of faulty testimony by a forensic psychiatrist.

Yates will be held at North Texas for 30 days to give doctors a chance to assess her condition and decide whether she should remain at the Vernon facility or be transferred to another site, KHOU-TV reported.

Testimony during her trial showed Yates was severely depressed and had tried to commit suicide several times. Prosecutors maintained, however, she knew the difference between right and wrong when she killed her children.
