HOUSTON, July 26 (UPI) -- A Houston jury Wednesday found Andrea Yates not guilty by reason of insanity in the killing of her five children.
The jurors deliberated 12 1/2 hours over three days before announcing the decision.
Yates held back tears as the jurors were individually polled. The verdict means Yates will be committed to a state psychiatric facility.
Yates was accused of drowning her children -- ranging in age from 7 years to 6 months -- in the bathtub of the family home.
This was the second trial for Yates, 42. She was convicted in 2002 but the verdict was overturned because of faulty testimony from a forensic psychiatrist.
The second trial lasted nearly a month. Yates cried during Monday's closing arguments and her ex-husband, Rusty, bolted from the courtroom.
The former nurse had a history of psychiatric problems and had tried to commit suicide several times.
