GOP Senate candidate sued by casinos

HARTFORD, Conn., July 21 (UPI) -- Alan Schlesinger, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Connecticut was sued by two New Jersey casinos over gambling debts in the 1990s.

One suit had been filed at the time that Schlesinger applied for a Wampum Card from the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, the Hartford Courant reported. Holders of the card receive complimentary food and hotel rooms depending on how much they gamble.

Schlesinger paid $28,000 to settle the suits by Trump's Castle and Caesar's Palace.

Gov. Jodi Rell and other leading Republicans have urged Schlesinger to drop out of the Senate race. The most recent Quinnipiac Poll showed him losing to either Sen. Joe Lieberman or Democratic challenger Ned Lamont -- and receiving only 9 percent of the vote if Lamont is the Democratic candidate and Lieberman runs as an independent.

Schlesinger refuses to give up.

"I have never done anything illegal. I did absolutely nothing wrong," he said. "I'm not getting out of this race because of the fact I had a couple of civil lawsuits filed against me 15 years ago."
