Fall travel gaining in popularity

NEW YORK, July 21 (UPI) -- Travel agents in New York and elsewhere report more and more Americans are traveling in the fall when prices are lower and vacation spots are less crowded.

Sabre Airline Solutions, a travel consultant firm, reports advance bookings for the September-November period are up an average of 5 percent this year compared to last year, USA Today says.

Bill King, head of Virgin Atlantic's North American operations, says his airline's peak period for flights to London has been stretching out for the last decade from the first week of September to Thanksgiving.

King says advance bookings for economy-class tickets are up 10 percent over last year.

A spokesman for Boston's Logan Airport reports passenger traffic to Florida and Europe is growing faster during September-November than in June-August.

Terry McCabe, an executive with Manhattan-based agency Altour, thinks people got used to fall discounts after the 9/11 attacks and now plan trips at that time to avoid the crowds.
