Mexico: Election loser vows to fight on

MEXICO CITY, July 6 (UPI) -- The losing candidate in Mexico's presidential election has promised to contest the results, El Universal newspaper reported Thursday.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the center-left candidate and former Mexico City mayor, said he was not finished fighting for the presidency, which he lost by a slim margin to right-leaning candidate Felipe Calderon.

Officials in the Obrador camp are calling for a manual recount of every single vote, and have threatened to orchestrate street protests. There were protests in the streets of Mexico City Wednesday afternoon, as a precinct-by-precinct recount began.

The Federal Electoral Tribunal has until September to ratify the vote.
