GOP leaders: Condemn Times on SWIFT

WASHINGTON, June 28 (UPI) -- House Republican leaders are reportedly working on a resolution condemning The New York Times for exposing government monitoring of banking records.

A Republican aide with knowledge of the legislation told The Hill the resolution is expected to condemn the leak and publication of classified documents.

The Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal all reported last week on the existence of a secret government program that tracked financial records overseas through the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications.

President George W. Bush criticized the newspaper reports Monday, calling the disclosure "disgraceful" and a "great harm" to national security.

New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller said a free press was the key check on government's abuse of power.
