MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 23 (UPI) -- After taking control of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, the Islamic militia has agreed to work with the transitional government under a cease-fire agreement.
Under the agreement signed in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, the Islamic Courts Union agreed to recognize the government led by transitional President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, CNN reported.
The Islamic Courts Union captured Mogadishu after weeks of intense fighting with the secular warlords backed by the United States.
The ICU has called for the establishment of Islamic law in Somalia, CNN reported. Currently the transitional government based in Baidoa has little power in the shattered country, which has not had a central government since 1991.
Separately, the report quoted a U.N. official as saying that Ethiopian troops have moved closer to its border with Somalia and may intervene if the Islamic militia moves toward Baidoa. The United States is concerned the country under the ICU could become a haven for the al-Qaida network.
The BBC reported that a Swedish journalist was shot and killed at a huge rally in Mogadishu in support of the peace agreement. No other details were immediately available.
