Serbia cannot condemn EU for its own flaws

BRUSSELS, June 21 (UPI) -- A spokeswoman for an EU diplomat says Serbia cannot condemn Brussels for Belgrade's own failures, such as non-cooperation with a U.N. tribunal.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn's spokeswoman Christina Nagy said Serbia's future is in the hands of its leaders, including Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.

Nagy said, "Condemning the EU for one's own failures is not serious," Belgrade's Beta news agency reported Wednesday.

In a speech Sunday, Kostunica berated the European Union for constantly setting conditions for talks with Belgrade.

The European Union in May cut off association talks with Serbia after Kostunica failed to keep his promise to arrest war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic.

In an ironic reference, Nagy said Rehn is grateful to Kostunica for not blaming him for a recent major defeat at the World Soccer Cup in Germany when Argentina beat Serbia-Montenegro 6-0.
