U.S. Episcopalians torn over gay clerics

COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 18 (UPI) -- The issue of ordaining known homosexuals as bishops was at the forefront of a national Episcopalian convention in Ohio Sunday.

Every three years church leaders convene, and going into its seventh day Sunday, the 2003 ordination of Bishop Gene Robinson was the hottest topic, the Washington Times reported.

Anglican bishops of 22 provinces around the world have fully or partially broken ties with the Episcopal Church because of the ordination.

An 18-member committee drafted a resolution Saturday saying the church expressed "regret" over the incident and offered the church's "sincerest apology" for not giving "sufficient importance to the impact of our actions" on the 70-million-member Anglican Communion. The resolution was to be voted on Sunday, the Times said.

Episcopal bishops and deputies passed a resolution Friday suggesting all future conventions be held in states that allow same-sex partnerships.
