Fla. governor irate over storm e-mail

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., June 15 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush lambasted a Democratic U.S. congressman for pushing insurance reform in e-mail as a tropical storm hit the state.

U.S. Rep. Jim Davis, D-Fla., who plans to run in the next gubernatorial race, sent an e-mail message Monday to constituents asking for insurance horror stories and promoting Democrats' insurance reforms, the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported.

It was sent as Tropical Storm Alberto was moving toward the Florida panhandle in the Gulf of Mexico, and its subject line said: "Alberto is here. Are we ready?"

In Tallahassee, Bush, a Republican, criticized the timing of the message, saying Davis' "ambitions seem to get in the way of common sense on a regular basis," the Post reported.

"I hope candidate Davis, if he was to be privileged to serve in the job that I have, I hope he would realize what a stupid statement that is," Bush said. "The day before a hurricane arriving on our shores is not the time to be talking about politics. It's the time to be preparing."
