Israeli missile kills nine in Gaza

RAMALLAH, Gaza, June 13 (UPI) -- Two missiles were fired from an Israeli helicopter at a van in Gaza Tuesday, killing at least nine Palestinians, two of them children, local media reported.

The Israeli military said it had intelligence the group in the car was traveling to a site where rockets have recently been fired into Israel, Ynetnews.com reported.

Minutes before the strike, Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz announced an end to Israel's military restraint after the fallout from an incident Friday in which seven members of a Palestinian family died in an explosion on a Gaza beach.

"We showed restraint in the face of the international outcry over the incident on Gaza beach but this has come to an end," Peretz said.

The results of the military probe into the beach blast were not due to be made public until Tuesday night, but the Arutz Sheva newspaper said Israeli intelligence claims Hamas had placed explosives and mines on the beach against Israeli naval commandos, and it was likely a Hamas-placed mine that killed the Arab family.
