Hamas seizes TV station as deadline nears

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza, June 5 (UPI) -- Hamas supporters seized a television station in Gaza Monday as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' deadline for recognition of Israel approached.

Armed men forced the staff of Palestine TV in Khan Younis to leave, calling them "dirty collaborators," the BBC reported.

Tensions between Hamas, which has a parliamentary majority, and Abbas' Fatah Party have been rising. Abbas is expected to announce a referendum on recognition of Israel's 1967 borders if Hamas fails to agree, Ynetnews.com reported.

Five people have been killed recently in clashes between Hamas and Fatah, although no injuries were reported in the attack on the TV station.

Also on Monday, a Hamas militant was killed and his wife and child injured in a blast at his house near the Jabaliya refugee camp. Israel, which usually admits attacks, has denied responsibility.
