Iran to listen, respond to EU nuke deal

TEHRAN, June 3 (UPI) -- Iran will accept a visit by the European Union's foreign policy chief, who's expected to offer the latest deal to get Tehran to quit enriching uranium.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran is allowing the EU visit but stressed halting enrichment will not be a condition for any deal.

The EU's Javier Solana, sometime in the next couple of days, will bring to Tehran an aid package that includes a nuclear reactor and a supply of enriched uranium, the BBC reports.

Mottaki said Tehran will review the proposal and then respond.

An international controversy has been growing since Iran's secret uranium enrichment program was unveiled more than two years ago.

Iran recently broke U.N. seals on closed-down enrichment facilities, and international inspectors say Tehran isn't fully cooperating.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purposes only, and it is exercising its rights as a sovereign nation.

A group of Western nations, led by the United States, is concerned the research is for nuclear weapons and is taking a hard line stance on talks with Iran, including calling for sanctions from the U.N. Security Council.
