GENEVA, Switzerland, May 22 (UPI) -- Dr. Lee Jong-Wook of South Korea, director general of the World Health Organization, died Monday in a Geneva, Switzerland, hospital at the age of 61.
Lee had undergone surgery Saturday for removal of a blood clot on his brain.
Lee had been director general of WHO since July 21, 2003, and had worked in various capacities for the organization for 23 years.
He was succeeded as acting director general by Dr. Anders Nordstrom, currently assistant director general for general management.
He was survived by his wife and son, two brothers and a sister.
