Israel captures Hamas bomb commander

RAMALLAH, Gaza, May 23 (UPI) -- Israeli security forces captured a senior Hamas bombing commander in Gaza Tuesday who has been on the country's most-wanted list since 1998.

Ibrahim Hamed, 41, surrendered to troops before dawn as bulldozers moved in to demolish a building in central Ramallah where he was hiding, Ynetnews.com reported. Using loudspeakers, security forces warned they would collapse the building if everyone didn't surrender.

After Hamed first refused, the bulldozer struck the house, and he then emerged, alone and unarmed. Two pistols were found inside, the Jerusalem Post said.

Hamed is the central suspect in numerous suicide bombings, including one at a Jerusalem cafe and at the Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus, the report said.

Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter said at least 96 bomb-related deaths were attributed to Hamed.
