MADRID, May 22 (UPI) -- Spain is attempting to block a plan that would allow outside nations to import olive oil to European Union countries.
Britain, the Czech Republic and Sweden supported the plan in hopes of curtailing the high cost of olive oil in those and other countries, the Spanish news agency EFE reported Monday.
Spain produces about 50 percent of the olive oil bought in EU countries. Its price has increased considerably in the last year due to the effects of last year's drought on the olive harvest.
Spanish officials, however, say the price of olive oil has in fact dropped 20 percent in the last week.
