Son of Sam sues lawyer for book profits

NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- New York's Son of Sam killer is invoking a law named after him in an attempt to send profits from his lawyer's tell-all book to his victims.

Convicted killer David Berkowitz wants to block his former attorney from making money off his sensational case by using the state's "Son of Sam" law -- enacted in 1977 and named after what Berkowitz called himself during his shooting spree -- which prevents convicts from profiting off their crimes, the New York Post reported.

The newspaper said Berkowitz sued his former attorney Hugo Harmatz last year for allegedly stealing personal possessions, including bar mitzvah photos and pictures of his now-deceased mother, and using them to self-publish a book titled "Dear David."

Berkowitz is serving life in prison for attacking at least 13 victims, killing six of them, in New York during the 1970s.
